A midwife, an artist, a mum of five, a cellist, a badass, a cinematographer, a fearless first time homebirther, the coolest couple in all of Europe, a vet, a project manager and a moonlit car park.
The women of my 2017 were as fierce and badass as they come. I watched some of you journey from a place of fear and doubt to elation and euphoria. I witnessed miracles as you breathed, moaned and birthed your babies into your warm outstretched arms.
Each of you have to taught me so much about birth but in all honesty I’ve learned more about myself and womenkind in our time together than anything else.
Justine, you birthed your daughter in the warm glow of your own living room. Your energy mirrored by the calm, peaceful water you knelt in. The fact that a fellow birth worker and midwife put her confidence in me to doula for her family gave me such an enormous confidence boost and for that and all this year has provided since you hired me, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Megan, my newfound friend for life! Oh how we can now chuckle at the irony of the worries you had while pregnant with your gorgeous little bub. ‘I just don’t think I’ll be lucky again second time around’. You cemented my belief and proved that birth ain’t a game of luck, it’s all love, self belief & a big dollop of knowing your shit!!
Sarah, you taught me that even a woman who knows birth inside out (legalities, physiology, emotions and psychology) still needs and deserves the support, belief and love of her doula. In fact, you taught me that is it exactly that breadth of knowledge that demands the hiring of a doula! Next time tho, I plan to actually be there, not on the motorway at the time! You’re raising the future Mama, I love you x
Emily, WOW! To all the health professionals who base their care on the age of the woman and not the individual woman herself, how I wish you could have watched this absolute sh’ero gently breath her first baby into the world. Your daughter arrived into a family so desperate to hold, gaze upon, kiss and love her. Your focus, concentration and strength still give me goosebumps and I often channel my inner Emily when I need to get a certain task done.
Stevie... Stevie, Stevie, Stevie! Has there ever been a woman with bigger ovaries than you? You never feared, you never faltered, you got that job DONE! You knew exactly what you wanted and you did it!
I fully believe fate brought us together all those months ago. You know why. I’ll never forget the night Winter was born, I can’t wait to tell her all about how much of a goddess her Mama is and how beautiful her dreamy, floaty entrance was!
Your focus, concentration and strength still give me goosebumps and I often channel my inner Emily when I need to get a certain task done.
Caroline, from the moment you first contacted me I was sold!! Ballsy, Australian woman who knows her rights and ain’t gonna back down from them... YES PLEASE UNIVERSE!? We’ve laughed, we’ve cried but most of all we have loved. Your family hold a particularly special place in my heart, I’m sure you know that. You taught me that the most important thing in birth is listening to the woman, her choices and her voice. If that is done than any birth can be empowering.
Natasha, the first time Mama who knew she could and damn well DID. You smiled at the doubters and rolled your eyes at the non believers. You carried on, never faltering in your quest for your gentle homebirth. You smiled and laughed during second stage! As your daughters head crowned you were on planet blissland. The oxytocin is strong with this one Obi Wan. You’re a sensation, please have more babies and hire me again! (Just kidding.... srsly tho?)
Réka, I had to be scraped off the ceiling the day you guys hired me! I fell so instantly in love with you and just knew that supporting your journey to motherhood was something I had to do. You birthed so instinctively, you listened to every little call your body made to you. The first pics of you meeting your son still make me well up big time. Go and tell the world how awesome birth is, you know it as well as anyone!
Krissy, my heart is yours. I knew how much I wanted to support you from the very first time we met. So much knowledge, so much grit. The birth of your son was nothing short of awe inspiring. The image of you breastfeeding your daughter while calmly zoning out a surge will forever remind me that we women can do anything we damn well wish. We are unstoppable.
Jen, the year closed out with the Mama of all surprises! Your little man didn’t wanna wait. You blew my mind, a born birther. You called it my love ‘I’m just made for this, I know it’. Weren’t you just.
To the lady in the car park at midnight one moonlight night. I think about you everyday. Guiding the baby you birthed up to your shocked but outstretched arms was the defining moment of my year. Watching your expression move from fear, to disbelief to utter joy was quite simply, everything.
I love you
