Our Birth Story
Our birth story...
Well We didn't make it to our homebirth and we didn't make it into the birth pool... BUT I Had the most incredible and healing birth that I didn't know I needed so badly.
So on Thursday I woke up and a usually 3 year old sets the pace of life and I kinda thought I had leaked my pee somehow. Anyway I stuck a pad on just Incase and went about my day. I dyed my hair...thankfully lol!
I was leaking on and off all day but tried not to think too much of it I was 37+5 weeks.
Bed time for toddler face came and took a while but all settled in bed 9pm and just dosing off and the trickle started...and didn't feel like it was gonna stop. I literally lept out of bed.and woooosh!
I just made it to the bathroom. Anyway i had been speaking to Jen our doula just questioning and wondering and she quietly organised her evening so when I txt to say this is it there was no surprises.
Anyway by 11pm things had begun surges were in full swing every few minutes lasting about 30 secs. I called triage as I was due to get all the boxes delivered from the midwife on Friday so had nothing here and no on call Rota as it didn't start til Saturday. I had made peace with pre 38 weeks I was going to hospital and my target was 38 for me to be comfortable with a homebirth. I could have faught it and triage even offered to sort it but i had my plan and needed to stick with it.
So made all relevant phone calls to parents to watch the dude that night and the next day and overnight. By 1.30am the surges had me crawling on the floor and I managed to just finish one in time for my parents arriving to happily jump in the car and wave good bye with smiles on our face 😂
Got to hospital finally made it to the Labour ward and consented to a check and I was 2 cm and thinning nicely she said. After a few minutes we were slowly making our way to the birth pool room and started on the gas and air phew!!! I was absolutly crawling the walls hanging over the back of the bed and I actually had a thought...this is transition ...it has to be!
The pool was just heating up
I had a notion to move and walk to the toilet ...no I turned back and stood at side of the bed. And the pain had changed my body wanted to push. The only voice I could hear was jen our doula explaining counter pressure to oh ...it was really good! So I fumbled to get my trousers and pants down and Jen said put your hand down so I did and I could feel the swell. A few more pauses and the head came out and few breaths and the body came out I caught baby with the midwife and brought her up straight away for cuddles. That intense feeling of pride, Love, relief and such awesomeness flooded me. That's when I started ticking off all my boxes and more. Golden hour, delayed cord clamping, delivering my placenta naturally at 1 hour and 1 min lol. And it's a girl...we were so convinced it was a boy! Clamping the cord longer to make room for a cord tie. I got to keep hold of my baby! I didn't have any coached pushing all was quiet other than me lol and my body just did what it needed to do. It was truly amazing. So baby was born 42 mins after arriving at the hospital I also remember the pool room being just beautiful with dim changing lights and watery reflections on the wall and ceiling. I really couldn't have asked for anything better. We left hospital at 2pm that day got home and all snuggled into bed. And ever since I have been enjoying the most amazing baby moon. I feel like I have healed so many old wounds i never realised I had from my last birth . It wasn't tragic but included NICU and a week long stay for both of us.
So this has made me feel so much relief.
I would love to thank our doula for the amazing workshop she runs and for all her help and care throughout our journey. I felt informed and strong and confident. No one knows how it's going to go but being prepared definitely helps with the decision making process and knowing you understood your options.
